Two women arrested smuggling illicit gin as babies

In one of the rare stunts, Police in Nyabihu district arrested two women who were trafficking 216 packets of Blue Sky liquor – an illegal gin. The suspects had wrapped the substances in a baby shawl and carried them at their back to masquerade as mothers carrying their babies

The duo identified as Jacqueline Nzitukuze, 32, and Ruth Nyiramukamisha 37, were arrest on December 19 at about 4pm in Mukamira sector.

According to the Western region police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire the suspects were in a commuter taxi that was coming from Musanze heading to Rubavu. Each of the suspects was caught carrying 108 packets of Blue Sky gin wrapped at the back.

“They wrapped baby shawls around the gin packets which they formed as a baby, wrapped well and dressed them like babies,” said CIP Kanamugire.

“We already had information that the two women had boarded a taxi with some illegal substance and we deployed our officers who stopped the vehicle and apprehended the two women red-handed.”

“We thank the public for providing us with information that led to the arrest of these two women and urge them to keep up this form of cooperation as it helps in keeping our societies safe.”

He further warned against making, trafficking, sell and use of banned and illicit substances noting that operations against such are ongoing and punitive Measures will be taken against anyone caught.
