No refugee status for Rwandans beyond 2017—Minister

{The Minister of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs, Seraphine Mukantabana has declared that there will be no refugee status for Rwandans by 31st December 2017 since all refuge cards will have expired by that time. }

Refugees still have one more year to proceed with repatriation back home under the auspices of UNHCR which emphasized repatriation during the Geneva Summit on refugee affairs.

In a talk show of Rwanda Today on KFM this morning, Mukantabana said the government of Rwanda is pleased with the international decision of removing a refugee status for Rwandans.

The exercise of repatriation will be done from 12 African countries hosting Rwandan refugees including; DRC, Congo Brazzaville, Uganda, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Cameroon among others.

The decision was taken after realizing that reasons for which Rwandans were granted refugee status are no longer relevant. Over 5000 refugees have been repatriated since the judgment of removing refugee status for Rwandans was passed in 2013.
