Kigali: Punishments await drivers’ public transport delay

{Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) has declared that punishments await drivers who frustrate passengers over delayed time spent at bus bus stops. }

The concern follows passengers’ complaints over prolonged stay at bus stops after the rise of public transport fare. Talking to IGIHE, citizens revealed that since the transport fare rose they have been footing the journey from their homes to Kigali town center over drivers’ impediment at bus stops.

Ruhumuriza Majidi, residing in Gatsata sector, argues that he has decided to foot the journey to avoid frustrations resulted from prolonged sojourn at bus stops.

“Since public transport fare has gone up; I never traveled on bus ahead of drivers’ delay waiting for passengers.”He said.

Emmanuel Katabarwa Asaba, the officer in charge public transport in RURA, says that the institution has not yet received such claims and warns drivers to be proactive to avoid punishments awaiting them.

“Even though the case has not yet proven accountability, drivers know that delaying passengers is against the rule. That is why we will not tolerate the subject.”Said Emmanuel.

He appeals to passengers to inform RURA in case of prolonged stay at bus stops to have offenders penalized.
