Parliament votes for constitutional amendments

The new amendment of five years will be preceded by a transitional period of seven years allowing any candidates including President Paul Kagame to lead Rwandans.

This is in accordance with the provisions of article 101, which states, “The President of the Republic is elected for a term of office of five (5) years. He/she may be re-elected once”

Responding to citizens demands expressed through nationwide consultations and close to four million petitions, the draft revision specifies that the President serving at the time of the constitutional amendment will complete his current term and remain eligible for a seven year term.

The transitional amendment based on Rwanda’s unique context in a bid to preserve nation’s achievements and creation of sustainable development foundation as reflected in Article 172.

In addition, Senators, President and Vice Presidents of the Supreme Court are now eligible to serve for a five year term renewable once.

The draft of the revision of the Constitution of the Republic of Rwanda of 04 June 2003 will now proceed to the Senate before Rwandan’s final vote on the adoption of any amendments through a nationwide referendum.
