According to the Rwanda National Police’s Revenue Protection Department (RPD), the seizure of the smuggled good was part of the force’s continued operations to fight tax evasion.
Inspector of Police (IP) Théobard Kanamugire, the Western region Police Spokesperson, who confirmed the development, said the goods were intercepted in a targeted operation following a tip-off from members of the public.
IP Kanamugire asked residents especially the business community to avoid dodging taxes and as a result have ownership in the country’s development by paying taxes to avoid repercussion.
“Taxes are revenues of the government, with this revenues, the government can establish a number of infrastructures which in the end turn out to benefit all Rwandans. Dodging taxes therefore is a criminal act which RNP cannot tolerate,” said Kanamugire.
IP Kanamugire commended residents who availed credible information that led to the seizure of the smuggled goods.
He appealed to residents to maintain cooperation with security organs through timely information exchange to ensure those suspected of tax evasion are arrested.
None payment of required tax attracts a jail term between six months to two years according to article 371 of the Rwandan Penal Code.
