Rwandan Army prepares for EAC Military Games

{Rwanda Military teams preparing to participate in East African Community Military Games scheduled in Uganda, Kampala from 15-28th July 2015 have started their in camp exercise. }

The players categorized in five discipline, Football, Basketball, Handball, Netball and Athletism are undergoing the last intense moral and physical preparations at RDF General Headquarters.

“The players are physically and psychologically well prepared for the games ahead and they are ready to meet their military colleagues from EAC partner States”, the Director of Sports at Rwanda Defence Force Headquarters, Maj Simba Kinesha said. He added that the players continue their preparations while conducting friendly matches and physical exercises.

The games are aimed at building cohesion and exchange of culture among EAC military Institutions. The objective of the Military Sports and Culture event is also to contribute to confidence building and nurturing a spirit of sportsmanship among the EAC Defence Forces as well as for the individual soldiers to demonstrate their immense talents and diverse rich cultures.

The Military Games and Culture Event are held within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Defence, which was signed in 1998 and revised in 2001. The MoU has specific provisions for areas of co-operation which are visits and exchange of information to which Sports and Cultural is encompassed, joint military training, joint operations and technical cooperation among the EAC Defence Forces.

The first EAC Military Games and Cultural Event was held in Uganda in 2005, the second was in Kenya in 2006, the third in Tanzania in 2007, Uganda hosted the fourth edition in 2008, the fifth was hosted in Rwanda in 2009, Burundi hosted the sixth edition in 2011, the 7th was held in Kenya in 2013 and the 8th edition in Zanzibar in 2014.
