Police in Kirehe District on Tuesday arrested Emmanuel Ndababonye, a herdsman for allegedly stealing 17 cows from his employer.
According to Inspector of Police, Emmanuel Kayigi, the Eastern region Police Spokesperson, the suspect stole the cows from Elias Gasana’s Kraal in Mpanga sector and was arrested as he headed to Nyarubuye sector.
“The suspect pleaded guilty to theft and claimed that Gasana owed him money,” said Kayigi, adding that Police has since returned the cows to Gasana.
According to Gasana, “after learning that my cows were not in the kraal, I suspected that Ndababonye had stolen them, so I immediately alerted the police that mounted a search and found them.”
Recently, Rwanda National Police (RNP), arrested a group of 16 individuals suspected to be part of a cattle-theft ring in the eastern province.
The arrest of 16 men brought the total number of those arrested in connection with cattle rustling to 53 that police has been tracking on allegations of stealing cows in the districts of Nyagatare, Gatsibo and Kayonza.
By then, 80 cows had been reported missing in those three districts.
In January this year, police recovered 12 stolen cows and returned them to the owner in Nyagatare District.The cows were recovered in the South Western Ugandan district of Ntungamo in an operation conducted by Rwanda and Uganda Police forces through information sharing.
Police verified and confirmed that they had been stolen from the farmer’s kraal in the night of January 3.
