{The Governor of the Northern Province, Aimé Bosenibamwe has challenged residents in the region to reinforce the crime prevention concept of Neighbourhood Watch, an initiative developed by RNP for communities to be an eye for neighbors to jointly promote preservation of peace and security. }
The Governor was speaking at an exercise in Rusarabuye Sector of Burera District on June 3, where over 1200 liters of crude Waragi commonly known as kanyanga and over 10, 000 sachets of other banned gin seized in various parts of the region, were destroyed.
Trafficking and making of illicit gin and brew are some of the common drug related crimes in the Northern Province, although on a downward trend.
“Safety, security and peace is a responsibility of every Rwandan and that’s why the idea of neighbourhood watch was developed for us all to own security challenges that could be affecting our fellow Rwandans living next door and to respond jointly to what can affect the safety of our societies,” Bosenibamwe told hundreds of residents, who turned up for the drug destruction exercise.
He appealed to them to desist from family conflicts and to always channel their grievances to concerned authorities like Police, Abunzi (mediators) and other legal procedures, instead of taking matters in their hands that also labels them criminals.
He further urged them to qqtighten community night patrols and timely information sharing on likely security threats of anything illegal.
Chief Supt. Dismas Rutaganira, the Regional Police Commander (RPC) for the Northern region said the destroyed drugs were seized from 27 dealers in the last three months, who were also arrested and currently either serving their sentences or still pending trial.
He embarked on the security challenges especially caused by drug abuse saying it has in most cases fueled petty theft, domestic violence and sexual crimes in the region.
CSP we echoed the need for ownership in fighting and preventing crimes.
The event was also attended by the Mayor of Burera, Samuel Sembagare, who called upon the residents to always report such individuals that try to cause insecurity in their communities.
