Kagame, Zuma, Buhari, General Idriss, Bouteflika to beef up IGAD-led Mediation for South Sudan

A High level African Union Ad-hoc committee composed of the Heads of State and Government of Algeria, Chad, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa is expected in Johannesburg in Midi-June 2015 to discuss peace and mediation process for the South Sudan, IGIHE reports.

The Heads of States will meet on the margins of the next AU Summit, scheduled to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, in mid-June 2015.

AU high-level ad hoc committee was established by the Peace and Security Council (PSC) at its 47th meeting on 5 December 2014 in order to support the mediation of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has on Tuesday announced that “The High-Level ad hoc Committee, which comprises the Heads of State and Government of Algeria, Chad, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa, will meet on the margins of the next AU Summit, scheduled to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, in mid-June 2015,”

Nkosazana made the announcement in a statement addressed to Sudan Tribune on the appointment of former Malian president, Alpha Oumar Konaré, as the AU high representative for South Sudan to coordinate an “African action” in the peace process aimed to stop the ongoing civil war in the young nation.

The AU support mechanism, which was announced at the African Union Peace and Security Council’s 494th meeting held on 24 March 2015 in Addis Ababa, is set to complement a new IGAD-Plus peace arrangement that entails substantive support from the UN and other partners such as Troika, EU and China to IGAD.
