{Eastern Africa remains the sub-region with the biggest hunger problem in absolute terms, being home to 124 million undernourished people.}
Tanzania according to the report has close to seventeen million undernourished people while close to ten people Kenyans are undernourished. Rwanda has about four million undernourished persons.
Uganda undernourishment figure have shot up from just for and half million people in 1990 to about ten million three hundred thousand people this year.
In Africa, the report notes, only four countries — Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, all in North Africa — have achieved MDG One as the world starts to craft the post-MDGs agenda.
“About 795 million people are undernourished globally, down 167 million over the last decade, and 216 million less than in 1990-92. The decline is more pronounced in developing regions, despite significant population growth,” the report states.
To curb the hunger figures, UN experts are suggesting an increase in the social protection systems in developing countries.
“Social protection directly contributes to the reduction of poverty, hunger and malnutrition by promoting income security and access to better nutrition, health care and education. By improving human capacities and mitigating the impacts of shocks, social protection fosters the ability of the poor to participate in growth through better access to employment,” the report states.
