Government has warned that it may be compelled to deport the 4000 Rwandese refugees if they do not get passports immediately.
Home Affairs Deputy Minister Panji Kaunda says the Zambian immigration laws are very clear and no one can be allowed to stay in the Country without legal documents.
Colonel Kaunda says the Rwandese refugees both at Maheba and Mayukwayukwa must immediately get passports being offered by their Country or face deportation.
ZNBC’S Lillian Kalaba reports that the Deputy Minister was speaking at the closure of a two day tripartite meeting for Rwanda, Zambia and United Nations high commission for refugees (UNHCR) in Kigali Rwanda.
Colonel Kaunda also asked the Rwanda Government to waive passport fees to make them affordable for the former refugees who are resisting to return home.
But Rwandese Minister for Disaster Mitigation and Refugees Seraphine Mukantabana says her government will not reduce passport fees and
ordered the refugees to return home because the genocide ended 20 years ago.
Meanwhile, UNHCR Country Representative for Zambia Laura Castro has urged the refugees to take advantage of the good will being offered by Rwanda and Zambia to make informed decisions and return home.
