Seven arrested for distributing illicit brew

{Police in Gatsibo District, Ngarama Sector, has arrested seven individuals including two women in possession of banned gin brands including three dozens of Chief Waragi, 10 sachets of Zebra Gin and 40 liters of a dangerous brew locally known as Kanyanga. }

The targeted operation was conducted on February 14 and was successful in apprehending the suspects who are believed to have been in the habit of distilling and selling the dangerous substances to the public in the area.

Police Spokesperson for Eastern Province, IP Emmanuel Kayigi, commended the public for participating in the arrest of such individuals, by providing timely information that proved helpful during Police operations.

“Illicit brew is dangerous to those who consume it however; some individuals have persistently refused to drop the habit. Police will continue such operations to ensure Rwanda is safe from all those that harm it with such dangerous trade,” he said.

The suspects are currently held at Ngarama Police Station as investigations continue.

Police conducts countrywide sensitization campaigns in a bid to stop the trade and consumption of illicit brew; and its targeted operations have led to the arrest of several suspects believed to be involved in the illegal trade.
