{Egyptian security officials released and deported Al Jazeera journalist Peter Greste after imprisoning him for 400 days. Authorities there had arrested Greste and two of his colleagues in 2013 for airing what the Egyptian government said was false information concerning the Muslim Brotherhood, the party led by Mohamed Morsi that was overrun in 2013 by the current government. Greste’s two colleagues remain incarcerated.}
Since Greste’s arrest, Egyptian authorities referred 20 Al Jazeera journalists to trial for airing false news as part of the current government’s crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood party. Since 1992, 11 journalists have been killed in Egypt.
This is part of a larger global trend. In 2014, 221 journalists were killed and 61 were imprisoned worldwide, making it the fifth deadliest year for the profession since 1992, when the Committee to Protect Journalists started tracking data.
And the new year isn’t off to a good start: Already, nine journalists have been murdered in 2015. We graphed out the 20 deadliest countries for journalists. Note that Egypt isn’t even on the list.
