Human trafficking is a real danger, Police warns

{Rwanda National Police has reminded the general public to watch out for any forms of human trafficking and report them to authorities in a bid to stamp out the score from society. }

Whereas the campaign against human trafficking has been magnified throu out the country by RNP and other partner institutions, it is definite that there are still criminals out there ready to pounce on the weak and vulnerable groups in society, such as the youth and unemployed.

The most recent event involves a case on January 17 when Police apprehended a 32 year old man for allegedly transporting three girls aged between 17 and 19 years from Rutsiro District, Western Province, to Kigali after promising them jobs.

It is suspected that the man identified as Emmanuel Nsengiyunva, intended to finally transport them to neighboring countries into crimes like sex slavery and forced labour.

He is currently detained at Gihango Police Station as more investigations are carried out.

The Western Province Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Emmanuel Hitayezu, appealed to the public to watch out for suspicious characters who promote suspicious migration of people on the lure of finding better jobs or better lives.

“Young people must not be swayed by these people who come with promises of heaven on earth. Once you suspect an individual or a group of people doing this covert business with the intention of trafficking people, immidiately alert police and let us do the job of stopping them,” he said.

Just last week, Police arrested two people suspected of involvement in human trafficking.

These suspects were arrested in a hotel in Nyabugogo with three potential victims who were being readied for a trip to Nairobi, Kenya.

Much as human trafficking is not an intense crime in Rwanda, Police is very vigilant at stopping it wherever it may occur, and has embarked on training more Police officers under the Interpol initiative dubbed ‘Smuggling Training and Operations Programme (STOP)’ which seeks to improve management of borders against human trafficking and other trans-national crimes like drugs smuggling.
