Kigali to Host Global Seminar to discuss Parliaments and Extractive Industries

{From 13th to 15th, January 2015 the Parliament of Rwanda will play host of the Global Seminar on the role of Parliaments and Extractive Industries under the theme: “Transparency and accountability in Extractive Industries: The Role of the Legislature”. }

Many of the developing countries rich in natural resources have faced challenges in using the revenue from Extractive Industries to eradicate poverty, whereby these revenues often lead to corruption and underdevelopment and sometimes fueled conflict and war. This Seminar will bring together Members of Parliaments, Parliamentary Staff, Civil Society Organizations, Extractive Industry Practitioners and Development Partners from worldwide to address this issue and promote the contribution of different stakeholders.

The objectives of the seminar include to share knowledge amongst the MPs on good practice around the Extractive Industries issues with a particular focus on parliamentary oversight and monitoring, to capture the experience of parliamentary delegations to be shared with the broader parliamentary community and to share the recent research outcomes and experiences related to the Extractive Sector.

The Seminar was organized in partnership with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank Group (Governance), the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Natural Resources Governance Institute (NIRGI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
