{Rwanda National Police (RNP) on 31, December, represented by Commissioner for Interpol, ACP Tony Kulamba, handed US$11,000 (over Rwf8 million) to Augustine Tibemanya, a Ugandan businessman. }
He received the money at the RNP Headquarters in Kacyiru, in the presence of SP Alop Bosco, the DPC of Kabale post, Uganda Police Force. The Rwf8million is part of US$16,000 that was allegedly robbed from Tibemanya on 12, December at Gatuna Border on the Ugandan side and transferred to Rwanda by a suspect identified as Hassim Kadafi.
According to the Police Spokesman, CSP Celestin Twahirwa, part of the stolen money transferred to Rwanda was equal to US$15000, while US$11,000 was recovered from relatives of Hassim Kadafi after intensive investigations and sharing of information between RNP and Uganda Police Force.
“Investigations are continuing to locate where the rest of the money is and this success was made possible due to good collaboration and sharing of information between Uganda and Uganda. We have the skills and technology to follow up on such cross border crimes – and this sign today proves that good partnership is beneficial to security,” CSP Twahirwa said.
“We call upon Rwandans to be vigilant and watchful especially in this festive period because some criminals are always waiting to commit acts like robbery, which may end up injuring or killing the victims. Those with useful information should share it with Police in a timely manner so that crimes like these are prevented.”
After receiving his Rwf8 million, an overwhelmed Tibemanya told journalists that he had proven the professionalism of RNP when he was asked to travel to the Kigali Capital to pick his money.
“This kind of professionalism and hard work exhibited by RNP is second to no other. I thought I had lost the money but I now have a large bunch of it and I am now confident that my matter is in the right hands,” he said.
Tibemanya who owns shops along the border and conducts Forex trading, told journalists that he had been attacked by thieves in a car on 12 December, shortly after withdrawing money from the bank. Although he escaped with his life, they were able to rob all the money he had withdrawn.
Once he reported to Ugandan Police, they tracked down the car driver, Hassim Kadafi, who was able to divulge details that led to the tracking of the money in Rwanda.
