PDI protests Article 101 of The Rwandan Constitution

{Rwanda’s Interior Minister Sheikh Musa Fazil Harelimana, chairman of the Ideal Democratic Party (PDI) has repeatedly stated that the seven-year term renewable once should prevent no one from running for presidency if citizens want to continue with his leadership, IGIHE reports}

Referring to article 101 of Rwanda’s constitution, the term of office of the current President of Rwanda expires in 2017 when he completes his second and supposedly last term.

The article is read as follows: “The President of the Republic is elected for a term of seven years renewable only once. Under no circumstances shall a person hold the office of President of Republic for more than two terms.”

Speaking to Journalist PDI Chairman said the article 101 of Rwandan Constitution should be changed by scrapping the seven-year term.

Sheihk Fazil says “This constitution is not in favor of the Democratic principles (…) the article 101 should be amended. This article is in opposition to the Democracy”

He said that in Democracy citizens enjoy full rights to vote for a leader of their choice adding that the limit of terms is to deny the citizen’s rights.

Meanwhile PDI has proposed to reduce the number for a term from Seven years to Five years but without limits to allow citizen to repeatedly vote for a President in case they still want him to lead the country.
