{Leaders from the South African Development Community (SADC) bloc and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) will meet soon for another summit to assess the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).}
This was disclosed by Angolan Foreign Affairs Minister Georges Chikoti after arriving at Luanda’s 4 de Fevereiro International Airport here Tuesday.
Chikoti had earlier attended a meeting of trustee countries in the Groups for Peace, Security and Co-operation in the DRC and the Great Lakes Region in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
He said the upcoming summit would enable regional leaders to review the progress achieved in DRC and analyse reports to be submitted to heads of state of SADC and ICGLR.
“The summit will only be convened after an assessment at the next ministerial meeting of countries in the two blocs on the real progress which has been recorded in DRC up to Jan 2, 2015,” Chikoti said.
This is the crucial deadline for the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebel group based mainly in eastern DRC to honour their commitment to voluntary disarm to guarantee implementation of the framework agreement for peace in eastern DRC.
The group of guarantor countries for the implementation of the framework agreement consists of Angola which currently chairs the ICGLR, SADC countries, the African Union (AU) and United Nations.
