RDF concludes Relief in Place for peacekeepers deployed in UNAMID

{The Last batch of RDF Peacekeepers arrived from Peacekeeping mission in Darfur, Sudan on 27th November 2014 at 1930hrs. RDF has concluded the Relief in Place started on 6 November 2014 for its 3 Battalions peacekeepers deployed in UNAMID, the AU/UN hybrid peacekeeping mission in Darfur.}

Col Sam Baguma, the Contingent Commander who came with the last batch of returning troops said that their mission was successful. “We have successfully accomplished our mission according to UNAMID mandate. As Rwandans, we conducted. Umuganda:civil- military activities such as building classrooms for students and providing medical treatment for IDPs”.

He said that they provided school materials and paid school fees for one year to 160 needy children in IDPs Camps. They also planted 170 thousand trees during community work.

The last coming troops were welcomed by Brig Gen Johnson Hodari and other Senior Commanders on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff. He commended the peacekeepers for their discipline and good service during the mission.

Rwanda, the fifth biggest Troop Contributing Country in the world, began the relief in place operation on 6 November 2014, for the 5,000 RDF peacekeepers deployed in UNAMID in Sudan, UNMISS in South Sudan and MINUSCA in Central African Republic.

The relief in place operation, utilising Rwanda national carrier, Rwanda Air is expected to conclude on 15 February 2015 after transporting over 10,000 troops.
