Three miners died in Gakenke

{ Three miners were confirmed dead Tuesday after they were trapped in a tin mine in Gakenke district in northern Rwanda. Another miner survived.}

Christopher Semuhungu, a police spokesman in the Northern Province, said the miners had gone deep and ran short of oxygen.

“It was due to the nature of the mine as it is narrow inside, and police fire brigade rescuers intervened only to find three people who were dead inside,” he told reporters.

The identities of the victims were to be confirmed. The mine was owned by a local cooperative known by its French acronym as Comikagi.

Semuhungu urged miners to be cautious and always wear oxygen masks whenever they want to go deep in the mine.

It was the first such incident in the area, residents and police said.

Last month, two people were killed on the spot while 28 others were injured aftera mine caved in Rwinkwavu Wolfram, eastern Rwanda.
