Rwanda: Congolese refugees to receive money in spite of Food Aid

{Rwanda’s Minister of disaster management and refugees has promised Congolese refugees living in Rwanda to receive money in spite of food aid so that the assistance may increase depending on the donor contribution.}

The Minister made the statement on 24th November 2014 while visiting the Nyabiheke refugee camp (Eastern Province) with the diplomatic corps accredited to Kigali.

She pointed out that this will be done in collaboration with UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, starting this year with the refugees from Gihembe camp in Northern Province.

Refugees complain of distribution of insufficient food aid to the point that they had to beg in the neighboring camp adding that even their girls lead themselves to prostitution in exchange for work so as to be able to survive their families.

Rwanda is home to over 60,000 Congolese refugees mainly Rwandophone accomodated in Kiziba camps (Karongi West District), Kigeme (Nyamagabe-South District) Mugombwa (Gisagara-South District) Gihembe (Gicumbi District) and therefore Nyabiheke in Gatsibo District in Eastern Province.
