The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $74.47 million loan to Rwanda towards the upgrading of 51.5kms of road, connecting the northern and eastern districts of Gicumbi and Nyagatare.
The development objectives of the project are to contribute to socio-economic development, to improve standards of living and regional integration through an improved and sustainable transport system that links centres of economic activity and access to social services, AFDB said in a statement seen by APA on Thursday.
The project is also set to benefit Rwanda’s connection to its regional neighbours within the East African Community (EAC) framework, considering that the Nyagatare road is a strategic alternative route for trade flow in the northern corridor linking Uganda, DRC, Kenya and Burundi.
The project will commence in 2015 and end in 2019 at a total cost of $78.99 million.
The Rwandan government is expected to provide the extra $4.52 million from its budget.
Rwanda is also connected by road to other countries in the Great Lakes Region, while its single international airport in Kigali, serves both domestic and international destinations.
The country is also set to build a second airport, which will be its largest, by 2016.
Although Rwanda does not have railways, there are plans to construct a line connecting it with Kampala in Uganda and Mombasa in Kenya.
