Rwanda will celebrate for the 4th time the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDR) on 5th November 2014.
On Wednesday, 15 October 2014, the Minister of Disaster Management and Refugees Affairs informed the Cabinet Meeting that the theme of the day is: “Prevent Risk and Build Resilience to Fire”.
The celebration at national level will be held in the City of Kigali. In order to raise more awareness, a disaster risk reduction week has been organized and activities during this week will include the following: Awareness walk; Conference on DRR at University of Rwanda, Huye Campus; Inspection of buildings and public spaces; meetings with Private Sector on fire prevention in urban districts and community work to support disaster affected families.
The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is normally organized marked each year on October 13th.
This year’s theme at International level is:” Resilience if for life”. However, Rwanda has adopted that theme into local context in order to raise public awareness on fire prevention in order to curb the escalating fire incidents trend in different parts of the country.
The International Day for Disaster Reduction started in 1989 with the approval by the United Nations General Assembly.
The UN General Assembly sees the IDDR as a way to promote a global culture of disaster reduction, including disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness.
Originally celebrated on the second Wednesday of October (resolution 44/236, 22 December 1989), the UN General Assembly decided to designate October 13th as the date to celebrate the IDDR (resolution 64/200, 21 December 2009).
