Rwanda National Police have arrested a man allegedly for conning another person of Rwf50,000.
Claiming to be an employee of Rwanda Focus, a local English newspaper, the suspect, who police have identified as William Sano, was arrested from police headquarters in Kacyiru, from where he had allegedly conned someone, saying he was getting married and therefore wanted financial assistance.
The suspect, 32, was arrested following a number of attempts to con different people of money using different gambits including claiming he was getting married and therefore needed assistance.
On other occasions, police say, the suspect, whom they claim is known in Kigali, has faked death of close family members to con people of money.
Sano is held at Kicukiro Police Station pending further investigation.
The suspect who claimed is an employee of Rwanda Focus, a local news paper was found in possession of five SIM cards.
“The public knows me by names of Patrick Mwebaze others call me Spice”, Sano said. He also said that he was a student of Nkumba University in Uganda.
Shyaka Kanuma, the Managing Director of Rwanda Focus who denied claims that Sano was an employee said “yesterday I was told about someone who came to Rwanda National Police headquarter offices claiming he was an employee for Rwanda Focus seeking for contributions of his wedding”, “those are hungry conmen who are looking for survival from the public with lies”, shyaka added
This act is punishable under article 318 of the Rwandan penal code
