“This common project for the three countries is extremely important because access to energy remains under 20 percent of citizens in Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania,” said Burundian Energy Minister Come Manirakiza at the launch of the 17th meeting of the Council of Ministers for the three countries.

The dam is expected to generate some 80 megawatts by the beginning of 2019.

“A lot of preparatory activities have already been achieved for the common project on Rusumo Falls, but there are still some challenges,” said Manirakiza.

He said that some financial agreements have already been signed notably between those states and financial institutions like the World Bank.

Manirakiza said the project started its effective implementation on July 11 this year.

“I’m glad that the common project responds to requirements set by the World Bank,” he said.

He said the project is to enter the decisive phase of execution, adding that the current meeting of the Council of Ministers is to plan activities within the execution phase of the project.
