Environmental stakeholders argued to join hands in reducing climate change impacts

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources (MINIRENA) Fatina Mukarubibi, has called upon Environmental stakeholders to join hands in reducing climate change impacts.

She was speaking at the opening of the National Steering Committee Meeting on Reducing Vulnerability to Climate Change in North West Rwanda through a Community Based Adaptation (RV3CBA) Project.

The objective of RV3CBA Project is increasing the adaptive capacity of natural systems and rural communities living in exposed areas of North Western Rwanda to climate change impacts.

“This aim fits with MINIRENA’s mission that is to ensure the protection and conservation of the environment and ensure optimal and rational utilization of natural resources for sustainable national development”, said Mrs. Fatina Mukarubibi.

She added that RV3CBA Project will help in meeting the EDPRS 2 goals, especially on Climate change where major areas of attention will be mainstreaming environmental sustainability and reducing vulnerability to climate change.

RV3CBA Project will deal with anti erosion activities including rain water harvesting systems. In fact, rain water harvesting is part of MINIRENA’s strategic plan for promoting water storage in the country for a multifold purpose: increase access to water and sanitation at domestic level, while reducing stress on our water supply networks. Hence, all MINIRENA stakeholders were requested to join hand in implementing RV3CBA project.

The National Steering Committee serves as the project‘s coordination and decision-making body and ensures the project delivers its outputs and achieves its outcomes. The Steering Committee also facilitates effective coordination between the key Governmental authorities at the national and district levels and ensures the project aligns with Government strategies and programs.

The Steering Committee comprises senior-level representatives from the two districts (Vice Mayors Economic Affairs) and key ministries: Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MINECOFIN), Ministry of Local Government (MINALOC), FONERWA, Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI), Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), Rwanda Natural Resources Authority (RNRA), Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA), Ministry of Trade and Industry (MINICOM), the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) and CARE Rwanda.

The Steering Committee is chaired by MINIRENA and will meet every 6 months to review progress and approve work plans, budgets and any major changes in implementation of RV3CBA Project.
