92% Of Burera Residents have no Access to Electricity

About 92% of residents living in Burera District have no access to electricity despite hosting Ntaruka Power plant.

During a radio talk show dubbed”Kubaza bitera kumenya”, the Mayor of Burera District, Sembagare Samuel said that only 7.9% of residents have electricity while others still use lanterns in their homes.

The representative of EWSA in Districts of Musanze and Burera, Mukiza Anaclet confirmed that the low percentage of electrification is because residents are unable to contribute money so that EWSA can provide Electrical transmission lines among residential areas.

Mukiza explained that each household should first pay Rwf 56,000 as a contribution to EWSA.

Although some of residents are unable to secure that amount, Mukiza added they can also pay in phases depending on their capacity.

Mayor Sembagare said that within this year the District is targeting to increase access from 7,9% to 12%.

The Mayor also added that the District will collaborate with EWSA to make sure that all residents living in villages “umudugudu” have access to electricity.
