70% Homes to Access Electricity by 2017

Prime Minister Dr Pierre Damien Habumuremyi has promised that 70% of households in Rwanda will have access to electricity by 2017.

Currently the figure stands at 16% of access to electricity
“The Government of Rwanda recognizes the role that energy plays in electronics development” PM said.

He made the remarks December 3, during the presentation of actions and policy of the government in the production and distribution of energy in the country.

Habumuremyi also said that in period not exceeding five years all public institutions will have access to electricity.

These include schools and educational institutions, hospitals, health centers and sector offices.

To achieve this, the government plans to increase the production of electrical energy by producing more than 1,000 megawatts (MW) by 2017.

This will cost around Rwf 3000 billions.
