66 Police officers return from UN missions

{The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana has urged officers who take part in peacekeeping missions to exploit the knowledge they acquire in advancing their policing skills and taking Rwanda National Police to a higher level.}

The IGP made the remarks on January 27, during a debriefing of 66 Individual Police Officers (IPOs) including 45 of them females, who returned home after completing United Nations peacekeeping tour of duty.

Thirty nine officers, all women, were serving under the United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) while 27 others were serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

“There is a lot you learn when you interact with other forces in peacekeeping mission, same as there is a lot that you teach them; exploit the knowledge you have acquired and share it with other officers, this way you will easily achieve policing duties whether you are serving home or in any other mission,” IGP Gasana told the officers at the RNP headquarters in Kacyiru.

The police Chief pointed out that the force has to continue to build on the policing achievements registered over the years, which made Rwanda one of the safest countries for doing business, and where people trust and rely on police services, as indicated by various international reports

The IGP also informed them of the force’s measures to ensure homeland security in collaboration with other regional and international police forces to combat cross-border and transnational crimes.

“The world has become a global village that’s why we need to always collaborate with other countries to ensure security around our borders,” he said.

Currently, Rwanda National Police maintains 855 peacekeepers operating in seven missions, who include 101 IPOs and 750 serving under five Formed Police Units (FPUs).
