Rwanda National Police (RNP) has publicly announced six men who are suspected to have a role in the recent death of a Ugandan businessman, Tunyinondi Dickson, stabbed to death before his car was set ablaze by assailants in Rwanda last week.
The murder triggered protests at the border, temporally disrupting business and traffic flow.
The men who were arrested are Munaba Joseph 34, Nyakagaragu Come 33, Bazirake Albert 65, Nzamurambaho 20 who was also a driver of the deceased, Ntakirutimana Francois 27 and Harerimana Shabani 25.
It emerged Dickson Tinyinondi, 28, a money changer at Katuna border, was trailed for some days before the deadly operation came to fruition.
His body was found burnt in his car on January 17 in Gicumbi District, Gaseke village, about one-and-half kilometers off Katuna-Kigali border.
The six were paraded before journalists at Kicukiro Police station on Wednesday.
At the time of their arrest, the six men were found in possession of Rwf10, 194, 000, Euros3,830 and Ush3, 143, 000, apparently which is part of the money they had stolen from the victim.
It is not yet clear how much these suspects stole from the victim, but Police Spokesperson, Supt. Theos Badege said “thorough” investigations are still on.
Rwanda National Police is also searching for other two men identified as Festo Mubirigi, the said-to-be the main brain behind the inhuman act, and his colleague only identified as Musirikare.
All the six arrested suspects, who confessed to the bloody crime, pointed a finger at Mubirigi to be the brain behind the whole scenario.
Nzamurambaho, the deceased’s driver said Mubirigi sold the idea to him, but added that the intention was to steal the money, but not to kill him.
Nzamurambaho said that on reaching at the crime scene, Musirikare stabbed the victim, before Mubirigi pouring petrol on the car setting the car ablaze with intention to destroy evidence.
Ntakirutimana, who owns a bar in Nyacyonga, said he was paid about Rwf6 million for his role in the death of the Ugandan businessman while his employee, Harelimana was paid about Rwf5 million.
Nyakagaragu on the other hand said he was given US$1,000 for his role.
Supt. Badege promised that justice will be served.
