Police has impounded a consignment of polythene bags at Giticyinyoni in Nyabugogo, Nyarugenge district within Kigali city.
The suspect Bizumuremyi Maurice was arrested with over 40,000 packs of polythene bags as he was travelling from Burundi.
Bizumuremyi told IGIHE that he usually smuggles the polythene from Kayanza zone in Burundi and crosses on foot into Rwanda where he later uses a vehicle to distribute them to his clients in Rwanda.
He said the Polythene bags consignment he has been arrested in posession with was meant to be delivered to a client based in Kimironko.
Eng. Collette Ruhamya a director in the Rwanda Environment management Authority REMA hailed the collaboration with Police in the fight against illegal use of polythene in the country.
She said Polythene material is hazadious to the environment urging the business community to help in the efforts against use of Polythene bags.
Supt. Theos Badege the Police spokesperson says, culprits found selling polythene bags risk punishment of cash fine between Frw100,000 and Frw300,000.
He added that those found Using polythene bags risk punishment ranging from fine worth Frw 5000 to Frw 100,000.
The Law is also very clear on punishments targeting factories engaged in the manufucture of polythene bags.
