Three people died and 24 others were injured in traffic accident when a vehicle went off the road in Jabana Cell in Gasabo District.
The vehicle, of registration number RAA 751K, Nissan truck belonging to STRABAG-construction company, had about 40 of its employees on board.
The injured were evacuated to the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) while the dead were taken to Kacyiru Police Hospital for postmortem.
According to Traffic Police, the causes of the accident were carelessness of the driver.
Though road traffic accidents are on the decrease, police said some road users, especially drivers, continue to drive carelessly and ignore traffic rules, which is one of the major causes of accidents, sometimes resulting into deaths.
Police Spokesperson, Central region, Superintendent Albert N. Gakara singled out careless driving and over speeding as one of the major causes of accidents.
“Speed thrills but also kills; drivers have to keep a rein on their speed. Despite the rules and laws in place, and increased awareness, some drivers continue to ignore them which have resulted into fatal accidents,” Supt. Gakara said.
He appealed to road users to contribute towards improving security on roads and protecting their lives.
