3 Arrested over Theft of Electric Cables

The trio – Dieudonne Habuhazi 30, Sarehe Miburo 35 and Emmanuel Irafasha – were arrested on April 9 in Kabeza Cell, Kanombe Sector after they were found in possession of water metres, electric cables and steel bars apparently cut from pylons.

They are detained at Kanombe Police Station.

Their arrest follows the recent capture of other two people in Nyarugenge District, also in connection with stealing electricity cables, which is usually performed in the wee hours of the night.

Such vandalism and theft have been attributed to the recent power blackout in and outside the capital, Kigali.

Senior Superintendent Albert N. Gakara, who confirmed the arrest, said that a number of cases have been registered in the recent past, but said that most of the prime suspects have since been arrested.

He warned all those involved in such criminal tendencies to desist before their luck elapses, adding that measures are in place to break such rings.

The suspects will be charged under article 300 of the penal code, which stipulates that any person who commits theft without violence or threat shall be reliable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of these penalties.

Senior Superintendent Gakara called upon the community to maintain their cooperation with security organs in fighting and preventing crimes, which he said has paid off in breaking criminal rings.
