74% Gatsibo Population Have No Access to Clean Water

Affected areas include Kiziguro,Kiramuruzi where residents fetch water in swamps. In Kiziguro sector, residents have to walk more than 3Kms to fetch water.

Highly concentrated centers including Ndatemwa, Nyagashenyi, Bidudu, Kamamesa,Bugarama and Ntende do not have access to clean water.

Kabeza and Bugarama areas in Kiziguro sector have more than 800 homes but the only source of water is in the swamps around which are also sources of water to grazing livestock in the area.

About four years ago, kabeza area was connected to piped gravity water, however, barely a month after the infrastructure collapsed forcing residents back to fetching water in swamps.

Some areas in Gatsibo last had water when President Paul Kagame visitied Murambi sector to officially open clean water supply facilities.

However, residents say since then the water infrastructure has collapsed and has not been fixed.

Care International an NGO, funded the water supply project that connected most residents to clean water supply points.

Later another NGO {Croix Rouge}-Rwanda promised residents to rehabilitate the dilapidated water infrastructure,but have since not.

The water pumps that used to pump water to all these areas is nolonger functioning, yet there is electricity in the area.

Habarurema Isaie(pictured below) in charge of Economi Affairs in Gatsibo district told IGIHE that there are plans to rehabilitate the water infrastructure to revive clean water supply to residents.

He said, “Only 26% of residents in Gatsibo District have access to clean water.”
