200,000 Residents in South Get Access to Clean Water

Through PEPAPS project, about 200,000 residents of the Southern Province have been provided with Water treatment plants and water distributions schemes to allow them access to safe water.

The water project was supported by Belgium Government through its Technical Cooperation-BTC.

The program has so far constructed or rehabilitated more than 40 water networks covering more than 500km across the three districts; Gisagara, Huye and Nyaruguru.

More than 200,000 residents now have access to water within 500 to 1000 metres from their households through more than 600 water taps installed in villages.

Emma Francoise Isumbingabo, the water and energy state minister revealed that inauguration of water plants is in line with celebrating the water week as well as marking the World Water Day celebrated on 22nd March, each year.

The State Minister said currently 70% of all districts in Rwanda have access to clean water.

However, she said Nyaruguru lags behind with 68% of access to clean water having shifted from 41% in 2012.

Mr Marc Pecsteen, Ambassador of Belgium who presided over the inauguration of the water plant said the Support programme for Water and sanitation services in the Southern Province known as PEPAPS, to which Belgium contributes almost 18 million Euros, is a testimony of Beligium’s commitment to supporting the ambitious development agenda of Rwanda.
