{{Rwanda Police and other local government authorities are looking for over 1440 prisoners whose whereabouts are unknown.}}
These prisoners were serving their sentences under the {Travaux d’Intérêts Généraux (TIG)}–a program that allows eligible prisoners to complete their sentences doing community service.
The said prisoners are said to have escaped between 2005 and at the begining of 2012.
Maj.Gen. Paul Rwarakabije noted that Prison authorities do not know whether these prisoners are in the country, alive or dead.
He said in Gakenke district alone, about 93 Prisoners under the TIG program have so far escaped, 15 of whom are natives of the area.
The national commission for the fight against genocide in Rwanda (CNLG) has condemned the escape of these prisoners urging local authorities to help in the search and location of the wanted prisoners.
