122 genocide victims given decent burial in Gasabo district

{Residents of Rutunga sector in Gasabo district yesterday accorded decent burial to 122 victims of 1994 genocide against Tutsi.}

The bodies were in the past buried by relatives on families’ land but were relocated to the Rutunga memorial.

The representative of relatives of buried victims, Ntaganzwa Jean Marie Vianney said that relocating victims to the memorial demonstrated among others giving honour and tribute, making it easy for communal commemoration.

He asked Rwandans to avoid reoccurrence of similar tragedies of 1994 where people would even kill friends.

It is said that killings in Rutunga started in 1950 and on November 24th , 1963 when Tutsi were called in a meeting by the former mayor of Gikomero district and 10 old Tutsi men were immediately killed and thrown in a mining crater.

Ntaganzwa lauded efforts of RPF Inkotanyi soldiers for intervention to rescue survivors.

Busangwa Evariste, one of the survivors in Rutunga, unveiled the Calvary path they passed through when he and two other people were surrounded by 400 men coming to kill them.

He said they were saved by two women who passed around and asked forgiveness for them saying they are innocent.

He said that he kept hiding till he was rescued by RPF Inkotanyi soldiers led by Colonel Musitu. He was born in a family of eight children but four of them and both parents were killed during genocide.

The senate vice president, Gakuba Jeanne d’Arc said burying victims in memorials accords good tribute to them.

She said that Tutsi killings during the 1994 genocide were incredible and noted that the government of Rwanda is committed human rights respect and protection.

Rwandans were requested to reveal whereabouts of genocide remains that are scattered to be accorded decent burial and keep away from genocide trivialization and ideology.

The burial of victims was preceded by prayers
