11% Rwandans use Hydropower–Study

Research on the country’s transition to the effective use of energy in line with the policy to promote green economy revealed that the year 2012 registered 11% hydropower use while the target is to have the number of users increased up to more than 35% by 2017.

The survey was conducted by the Government of Rwanda through Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The research mainly focused on energy as one of the requirements in all development activities like industry sector without ignoring its importance both at household level and public places like schools, prisons etc.

REMA says the increase in hydropower users will reduce the number of people who still use other natural resources merely plants as source of energy from 94% to 50%.

This study comes to support vision 2020 through which government takes energy efficiency as one of important factors in poverty reduction.
