{Police in Budaka have arrested the district crime preventers coordinator on allegations of extorting money from fellow crime preventers in exchange for motorcycles that police procured for them.
}
Mr Micheal Odongo, the Bukedi regional police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said the accused was arrested on Tuesday following complaints from 13 sub-county crime preventers co-ordinators over extortion of more than Shs700,000.
“Upon hearing that the police had delivered 13 new motorcycles meant to be distributed to them [crime preventers], he started demanding from each sub-county co-ordinator Shs70,000. This, however, forced a section of them to report the matter to police and we swiftly arrested him for obtaining money by false pretence,” Mr Odongo said.
Mr Odongo said the suspect was assigned to identify but not to recruit sub-county coordinators of crime preventers, but he decided to extort money from them.
He added that the suspect would be taken to court to answer charges of obtaining money by false pretence and forgery after getting advice from the state attorney.
