Uganda:Baryamureeba, Mbabazi fight over party colour

Kampala- Presidential candidate Prof Venansius Baryamureeba has accused his opponent, Mr Amama Mbabazi, of using his political colour, orange, which he claims he reserved with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) before the latter.
According to Prof Barya, as he is commonly referred to, he announced his candidature on May 17 and immediately wrote to the IEC where he reserved the orange colour and a clock as his symbol.

But to his dismay, when Mr Mbabazi later declared his presidential ambitions, most of his campaign materials possess the orange colour. To Prof Barya, this will confuse the electorate. He appealed to IEC to resolve the misunderstanding.
“Amama Mbabazi is a good politician but is very dishonest. I wrote to the Electoral Commission and they wrote back declaring me an independent aspirant. I also reserved the orange colour with them and the clock symbol and I have letters to that effect,” Prof Baryamureeba said.

However, Ms Josephine Mayanja Nkangi, Mr Mbabazi’s spokesperson, yesterday said her presidential candidate’s colour is tangerine orange, white and black.
“He should have written to Electoral Commission to sort out his colour,” Ms Nkangi said.

EC position

IEC spokesperson, Jotham Taremwa said their concern is not colour but the symbols which will be printed on the ballot papers to represent each candidate. “The ballot papers we print are not in colours. Ours are symbols which we approve. The ballot papers are printed in black and white; a colour is irrelevant to us,” Mr Taremwa said in an interview.
