Tanzania journalists congratulate EAJA

{Dar es Salaam (RBC) Tanzanian journalists have congratulated the Eastern Africa Journalists Association (EAJA) for successfully concluding its last week’s Extra-Ordinary Meeting in Bujumbura, Burundi and for strengthening the association’s leadership.}

The journalists, through the chairman of the interim Committee of the Journalists Union of Tanzania (JUT) Samson Kamalamo also welcomed the election of JUT’s Vice Chairperson Sophia Ngalapi as EAJA’s Vice President . He also congratulated EAJA for successfully holding a two-day workshop on improving the working conditions of journalists through union capacity building to improve press freedom in the region.

“We as journalists in Tanzania welcome the ongoing efforts to re-brand and strengthen EAJA through giving it leaders of integrity with the focus to move the organization forward. We are confident that the team elected in Burundi has the capacity to move strengthen the association,” said Kamalamo.

He said the election of Ms. Ngalapi as EAJA’s Vice President not only confirmed the desire of the association towards greater inclusion of all countries in the region on its leadership but pointed to the association’s commitment to implementing resolutions previous made to attain gender parity with the organization.

Sophia Ngalapi is the first Tanzania female journalist to take that position in the association since its establishment. Kamalamo reiterated that, EAJA community decision to elect Ngalapi as Vice President of EAJA was an honour and respect to the media fraternity in Tanzania.

“I believe the election of Ngalapi to be Vice President of EAJA is respect and dignity to media fraternity in the country and this is a challenge for all Tanzania journalists to make sure we unite in order to strengthen our dignity in international arena,” said Kamalamo.

During the meeting in Burundi on November 10, Anteneh Abraham Babanto from Ethiopia was elected as the new president to replace long serving Dr. Muheldin Ahmed Idris from Sudan while Alexandre Niyungeko from Burundi was confirmed as Secretary General to replace Omar Faruk of Somalia who was removed in January 2014 over integrity issues.

Others elected were Erick Oduor (Kenya) as First Vice President, Glorias Musiime of Uganda as Executive Committee Member while Jane Uwimana (Rwanda) and Maureen Mudi (Kenya) were confirmed to their positions as Treasurer and Executive Committee member respectively.
