{EGYPT welcomed an agreement by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in Arusha recently, commending President Jakaya Kikwete for the job well done to reconcile the rival parties.}
The Egyptian Embassy said in a statement in Dar es Salaam that the Arab republic fully appreciated the pioneering role played by Tanzania in bringing the Sudanese brothers to the negotiating table towards a comprehensive reconciliation process within the SPLM.
South Sudan President Salvar Kiir, his estranged assistant Riek Mashar and several other South Sudan opposition leaders attended the agreement signing ceremony in the northern tourist city of Arusha.
“Egypt commends the agreement reached on principles and targets that will govern the reconciliation process, which will put an end to the political and security crisis that prevailed in South Sudan since mid December 2013, claiming several lives,” said the embassy statement.
The Arab Republic expressed optimism over the political negotiations under Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), saying they will achieve positive result.
Through the statement, Egypt reaffirmed its full support to the ongoing mediations as well as maintaining and continuing its contacts with all parties in South Sudan towards the comprehensive and stable agreement that will allow the return to normal life in Juba.
“We are looking forward for enhanced peace, stability and development in the brotherly state of South Sudan,” Egyptian Embassy said in the statement.
South Sudan leaders were in Arusha recently for talks with President Kikwete over the fate of the wrangling parties in Juba.
Mr Kikwete had invited both President Kiir and Mr Machar, who leads an opposition wing of the ruling SPLM-IO. President Kikwete had through CCM invited the principals of the warring parties to discuss unification of the SPLM.
