Tanzania:3 held over missing tobacco consignment

{THREE people are being held by the police in Dar es Salaam for allegedly shipping boxes of stones instead of tobacco.}

Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Mr Simon Sirro named the suspects as Mohamed Waziri (58), a driver, Samson Tarimo and Felix Tarimo, both employees of Tarimo yard in the City.

“Waziri was hired to transport 99 boxes of tobacco weighing 200kg each and worth 150m/- from Alliance One Tobacco Tanzania Ltd (Morogoro) to Dar es Salaam,” said Mr Sirro.

According to him, the 99 boxes of tobacco were packed and then sealed at Morogoro ready to be shipped to Germany via the Dar es Salaam Port.

“After reaching Mabibo area in Dar es Salaam, the driver in collaboration with the yard owner’s son (Samson Tarimo) cut the seal and stole 71 boxes of tobacco before replacing the stolen tobacco with boxes filled with bricks,” narrated Mr Sirro.

He went further and said that the container was then shipped to Germany with only 28 boxes with tobacco, with the rest filled with bricks.

The 71 missing boxes were discovered after the container reached its destination, which prompted intensive investigation which led to the arrest of the three main suspects who confirmed participation in the incident after thorough interrogations. Police efforts managed to recover all the 71 boxes, and the police say that they are conducting further investigations to find out if other parties were involved.
