  • Remote Estates facilitating Kigali tenants to own houses

    {Being a tenant, renting a dwelling place, has never been anyone’s wish; yet almost all people in the journey of their lives usually do rent. Every tenant always dreams of owning a house, dreams that remain unattainable to many, forcing them to endure the life-time burden.}

    Having noticed such a nightmare of house tenancy in Kigali, Remote Estates has started a ‘Be Your Own Landlord’ campaign that will avail 282 affordable housing units by 2019.

    Units’ buyers are allowed to pay in five installments starting from groundbreaking to completion, according to Remote Estates, a subsidiary of Remote Group of companies which is widely known as an engineering, construction and project management firm.

    The company has started with dwelling units adjacent to Masaka Hospital in Kicukiro District which include modern apartments, townhouses and single-family homes, all designed to provide a comfortable, green and affordable lifestyle.

    Speaking to IGIHE, Claudette Rubangura, the Corporate Relations and Marketing Officer at Remote Estates, said the firm is committed to providing decent housing at affordable prices.

    “Our vision is to pioneer a model of privately developed affordable housing adapted to Rwanda housing market, using cost effective building technology, ecologically driven urban design, and cultural responsive housing designs,” she said.

    Rubangura said the units include 162 apartments, 54 attached townhouses, 24 semi-detached units, seven detached units as well as 34 units for shops or offices. The five-hectare site also offers 219 parking spaces and nice green space that covers 29% of the site.

    Registration of buyers gets underway

    Remote Estates has opened registration of units’ buyers and a number of clients have already got on the list.

    “Many people have turned to us to ask about the requirements to own one among the upcoming houses in Masaka. We are now registering them,” she said.

    She said that a client pays an advance of $100 for reservation of a unit of their choice while the unit’s cost will be paid in five installments with the first installment due at the beginning of construction works.

    “Considering the quality of our units and the facilitation of paying in installments, the units are undoubtedly affordable. For example, the cost of a three-bedroom apartment with its facilities starts $35,000 (around Rwf30 million) and the apartment is incremental to allow the owner to customize the inside walling the way they want,”

    ‘Be Your Own Landlord’ campaign ongoing

    Remote Estates has started a campaign dubbed “Be Your Own Landlord” that calls Rwandans to strive for owning houses and get rid of renting pressures.
    Through the campaign, Remote Estates educates people on the possibilities of having their own houses.

    Interested clients can find further information on www.remoteestate.com and by visiting Remote Estates’ offices at Bodifa Mercy House, 2nd floor, opposite the Ministry of Justice (MINIJUST). You can also email them via estates@remotegroup.com or phone +250 788 316 777

  • Zirumuze Clinic: Eradicating diseases using natural medicine

    {Zirumuze New Life Clinic, a herbal medicine and treatment facility, has made strides in using natural medicine to successfully treat and manage various diseases.}

    Herbs constitute a major component of traditional and modern medicine. Rwanda’s development is founded on different pillars including the health sector that has modern and traditional medicine.

    This complementarity between traditional and modern medicine is also reflected in the fact that the National Itorero Commission (NIC) considers practitioners from both for civic education to strengthen their values as they exercise the delivery of health services.

    Fourteen years on the course of treating people with natural medicine from inside and outside the country, Samuel Nyakarundi, the Managing Director of Zirumuze Clinic, a researcher in natural medicine and public health officer, reveals to IGIHE that he has found out that well-practiced traditional medicine has a great bearing on human health.

    He draws the conclusion from a number of people who have been treated successful by Zirumuze Clinic using natural medicine and healed of different ailments that had resisted modern medicine.

    “Since we started, we have cured 90% of patients from Entamoeba Histolytica, using our natural medicine called Rubagantare (in local language). This medicine is in form of capsule and liquid. Patients who used it testify that Rubagantare cures amoeba and its effects,” said Nyakarundi.

    While many people say that amoeba keeps reoccurring over some time even when it has been cured, Nyakarundi says that it is now seven years since they treated a good number of people from amoeba and it has never reoccurred as treated people testify.

    Zirumuze Clinic has so far successfully treated hepatitis B and C at 60% and 65% respectively, blood pressure at 85%, epilepsies at 80%, sexual impotence with male and female at 90%. People with obesity have been cured at 75%, diabetes at 65%, prostate at 85%, kidney at 70%, stomachache at 80%, persistent headache at 75%, asthma at 70%, rheumatism at 75% and female genital diseases at 75%.

    Nyakarundi explains that at least 9000 people have been cured from amoeba out of 10,000 who turned up to Zirumuze Clinic in the last 12 years. “We don’t just do a guess work, we do treat people and they attest to their recovery,” he said.

    Nyakarundi says that Zirumuze Clinic employs only professionals who are able to explain to patients about the use of any medicine and its effects on their health.

  • Working together towards eradication of clubfoot as permanent disability in Rwanda

    { {{Clubfoot background and in the society }}

    Clubfoot or congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a common congenital musculoskeletal defect that is characterized by a downward and inward twisting of the foot. Around the world, 150 000 – 200 000 babies with clubfoot are born each year.

    Approximately 80% of these will be in low and middle income countries. Most of these babies will not receive effective treatment for their clubfoot and will grow up with severe disability as a consequence. }

    The burden of this disability impacts on society as a whole and as such the problem of untreated clubfoot should be viewed as a public health issue which must be addressed. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Article 26 states that persons with disabilities should have access to rehabilitation services which enable them to attain and maintain maximum independence and ability.
    (http://www.ohchr.org/EN/HRBodies/CRPD/Pages/ConventionRightsPersonsWithDisabilities.aspx#26)
    These services should begin at the earliest possible stage and should be provided by appropriately trained rehabilitation professionals.

    Untreated or incorrectly treated clubfoot soon becomes ‘neglected clubfoot’ as the child grows older and learns to walk. As the child bears weight through it, the foot position worsens and becomes more twisted. The child’s weight goes through the side and top surface of the foot as it twists, and a large bursa and callous form on the weight-bearing surface. A child with neglected clubfoot will have difficulty in wearing normal shoes and as they grow older may experience severe pain. Neglected clubfoot severely restricts ability to walk in some cases, and in others only short distances are manageable.

    In Rwanda like in other Low and Middle Income Countries LMICs where transport and other infrastructure are not developed and people’s main source of income tends to be agricultural or manual labour the consequences of a neglected clubfoot can be devastating, severely impairing the individual’s ability to participate in society and income-generating activities.

    In many places people with visible deformities are stigmatised and excluded from society because of cultural beliefs about disability. Practically, this can mean that individuals with clubfoot may be less likely to attend school, marry or get a job. Even the families of children with clubfoot may experience prejudice as people in some cultures believe that clubfoot is caused by a curse or evil spirits. In some countries, the mothers of children born with clubfoot may be blamed for the deformity, leading to severe family conflict, separation and even divorce. This further perpetuates the cycle of lack of participation, poverty and vulnerability caused by disability.

    {{Profile of cure international/Rwanda clubfoot program }}

    In many LMICs, the price of treatment combined with the cost of transportation and the time away from income-generating activities is often more than most families can afford.

    From the research conducted by Hussein et al in LMIC (Pakistan) published in 2014, the average per-patient cost was $349 (Rwf 288,972) for the Ponseti method and $810 (Rwf 670,680) for patients treated surgically. The direct household expenditure was $154(Rwf 127,512) and $314 (Rwf 259,992) for the Ponseti and surgical methods, respectively. The majority of the costs were incurred pre-diagnosis and after inadequate treatment, with the largest proportion spent on transportation, material, and fee for service.
