  • Kigali Marriott female staff visit, inspire women in Kayonza

The hotel which is a flagship of the Marriott International, giant global brand provided jobs to 26 of them in 2016 under its partnership with Women for Women International.

Five former trainees of Women for Women who now work with Kigali Marriott Hotel shared the experience and progress they have attained in a bid to inspire around 100 others in attendance.

The testimonies rotated round the hardships the five went through prior to joining the charity and the hotel and how their lives have quickly changed since June 2016 when they got descent employment which was a dream to women who did not manage to complete secondary school.

Marthe Mukambonera, 58, who is working in Marriott’s housekeeping as a tailor, said she was formerly frustrated by doing home chores while her husband was the only bread winner for the family of four children living in Gikondo, Kicukuro District.

“Women for Women found me among the vulnerable women and gave us training in 2013.We were told in 2016 that the giant hotel brand called Marriott was going to open operations in Rwanda and that they wanted some us who were trained by Women for Women. We were taken to that centre in Kayonza for further training,” she said.

“Joining Marriott has earned me a lot. Together with my husband, we have started developing a house at the budget of Rwf45 million, now standing at the value of Rwf30 million as we continue to finish it. We do not know English language but we do our work properly, we have received credits many times.”

English language is the major medium of communication at Kigali Marriott Hotel.

Adalie Umutoniwase, who is also in housekeeping at Kigali Marriott Hotel, said she lived a miserable life that forced her to drop out of school from senior five and got her hopes for the future swept away.

“I joined Women for Women in 2012 and got trained in doing business. I was a poor woman before securing a job at Marriott but I have now attained good development. I can save money every month after daily expenditures plus my two children’s school fees that total to Rwf80,000 per term. I managed to secure a loan of Rwf2 million, added Rwf2 million that I had saved and bought a house at Rwf4 million recently,” said the mother of two living with her husband in Gitega Sector, Nyarugenge District.

Yulia Bogdanova, the Human Resource Director at Kigali Marriott Hotel who led the delegation to Kayonza, said the Women for Women graduates have emerged among the best performing members of staff at the hotel.

She encouraged other women to save some money out of their earnings, have self-esteem to do great things and told them that, with hard work, they have to keep up hope for better life.

    Hope for future

Expressing gladness over their fellow women’s success, the participants branded the testimonies “inspirational” and committed to follow suit as they have already started the journey under Women for Women guidance.

“With the good leadership of our country that highly values women, my future is good. Despite the fact that I never stepped in class, I have acquired a lot of skills about doing business, saving and family management thanks to Women for Women’s training,” said Latifah Mugorewishyaka, a resident of Mukarange in Kayonza District.

Kayonza Vice-Mayor in charge of Finance and Economic Development, Consolée Uwibambe commended Kigali Marriott Hotel for employing the formerly vulnerable women and taking them back to the women’s centre to inspire and encourage others.

She encouraged women at the centre to increase production of their different products such as Urugo yogurt and pledged advocacy for a wider market.

Antoinette Uwimana, the Country Director of Women for Women International, said the Urugo Women’s Opportunity Centre that started in 2013 has so far trained over 5,000 in different professional courses such as basket weaving, cultural and community tourism, housekeeping, culinary, modern farming, among others.

“We also train women about business and give them toolkits to start out. This is the main centre but we also train women from other centres in seven districts around the country. Most of them create jobs, we help some to find good jobs that get them good capital to quickly change their lives. Like these ones who got jobs at Marriott are developing very quickly because of the good pay,” She said.

Uwimana commended Kigali Marriott Hotel for taking back women who were trained by Women for Women to share their testimonies, saying that it is inspirational and giving others hope that, with commitment and hard work, a good future is possible.

  • Kigali Marriott Chef Sindayigaya scoops regional Silver Chef award

Sindayigaya was awarded with a trip to Uganda’s Bwindi impenetrable national park after outshining other seven chefs from each of Rwanda and Uganda and one from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Organised by Gorilla Highlands, the 4th edition of Silver Chef competition was held at Marriot Hotel over the last weekend whereby every chef was provided with different food items and required to prepare two types of meals, one with and another without meat. They all got to know the present items on the kitchen spot.

The jury tasted each chef’s dishes on Saturday and announced on Sunday that Mr. Sindayigaya Ramadhan had emerged the best chef.

Chef Rama as he is widely known had also won the second prize at the same competition in 2017.

In an interview with IGIHE prior to the competition, Sindayigaya, who usually specialises in Italian cuisine at the Marriott’s Cucina Restaurant, had expressed confidence to win the competition adding that besides the appreciation accorded to the winner, the competition also helps them showcase their abilities and build up their fame.

“This competition puts us in touch with other chefs from different countries to share skills as we learn from one another. It also markets us broadly because it attracts many people,” he said.

Gorilla Highlands Managing Director, Miha Logar, said the competition which had come to Rwanda for the first time intends to bring together chefs and other tourism practitioners in the three countries in order to build up synergies and develop the industry.

Mr. Logar said much as every country has its specific activities in tourism, they all share gorilla population, therefore bringing together DRC, Rwanda and Uganda will showcase the region’s tourism potentials and attract many visitors.

All other chefs were recognised with certificates of participation. Those include Mukungu Akimu from Grand Legacy Hotel in Kigali and Jean Bosco Birindwa from Ihusi Hotel in Goma, DRC, who were recognised as the best Ugandan and Congolese chefs respectively.

Others are Manishimwe Jean Bosco from Lake Kivu Serena Hotel in Gisenyi, Rwanda; Musasa Marcellin Tshite from Virunga Lodge in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda; Odeke Silver from Cephas Inn in Kabale, Uganda; Otim Amos from Protea Hotel in Kampala, Uganda; Emmanuel Murwanashyaka from ParkInn by Radisson in Kigali, Rwanda; Sam Mbabazi from Bunyonyi Overland Resort in Kabale, Uganda and Paul Mulyampiti from BirdNest Resort in Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda.

  • Kigali Marriott serves guests with sizzling Brazilian buffet

Participants at the Mardi Gras Party were hosted in Marriott’s Soko Restaurant that is usually renowned for serving delectable cuisines like Belgian, Indian, Turkish, African and more.

Mardi Gras is the most popular carnival celebrated in Brazil and other Latin America countries.

From 6pm to 11pm, guests enjoyed dishes commonly known in Brazil and cocktails that are mainly served in Caribbean countries. Congenially hot Latin entertainment spiced up the banquets as Marriott staff interacted with the visitors, wishing one another to enjoy the Brazilian delicacies.

Kigali Marriott’s Restaurant Lounge Manager, Kunal Amit, told IGIHE that Marriott is ever striving to serve the best and diverse cuisines to provide guests with a range of choices to break routine foods and keep the appetites high.

“This country is going to boom. So far I have seen many tourists coming in; so if you give them only the African food, they will definitely get enough of it and miss their favourite food from other parts of the world. The African and Brazilian food mixed together makes something new and this is something people like,” he said.

Amit went on saying “This is a kind of union – unity and diversity. You can get fed up with having the same food or same buffet. Sometimes you need to celebrate something so people get excited to come here to see something different. That’s why we are celebrating tonight.”

He said Brazilian food is like a mixture of African and European cuisines, meaning that it has some taste of African and European cuisines.

Kigali Marriott’s Executive Sous Chef Awanish Joshi said Mardi Gras Party showcased Brazilian barbecue, a good meat selection and other popular dishes that are served in Brazil.

  • Rwanda chosen for the launch of KORA Coaching & Business Academy

Through this partnership KORA has made a provision for CWNK members to benefit from an exclusive first access to its Coaching & Business

Academy. With CWNK launching is new membership structure, the Network’s members will be counted among the exclusive soft-launch with women only as Coaches-In-Training.

Why is the Coaching Academy Relevant to Rwanda?

    1. Professional Development

Africa (including Rwanda) has the largest population of youth amounting to almost 50% of the continent. The younger majority of Africans need access to Coaching & Business skills academies with a local context and at world- class standards. Currently, In Rwanda, there is a scarce supply of Rwandan companies providing internationally recognized coaching programs, in addition to the ability to train and raise a generation of Professional Coaches. Most Coaching service providers are being sourced from outside Rwanda. Kenya, South Africa, the UK & USA are the main countries delivering coaching services in Rwanda. Acquisition of international coaching services is costly and tends to be a less consistent approach due to short term nature of coaching programs. Therefore this leaves a narrow room for services consumption thereby not contributing to long term development of professionals.

Made-In-Rwanda Solution for the Coaching Industry

    2.Coaching Industry Development

The current consumer driven status does not necessarily leave room for Job creation in the Coaching Industry. Hence little social impact is made as the local sector development is limited.

In the USA alone, Business Coaching Industry amounts to a revenue of $11 billion, with an annual growth of 3.5% of which 51,946 businesses contribute to the local economy with over 88,222 registered private companies.

A study conducted by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) & International Coaches Federation (ICF) 2016 shows that annual revenue from the Coaching Industry in Africa amounts to $73 million. This figure predominantly comes from contributors in South Africa & Kenya. In the same study, it is recorded that an average annual income of a Coach practitioner is of $35,900 (or $2,991 monthly income).

With the launch of KORA Coaching & Business Academy (KCA), the intended outcomes are to bring home grown solutions for local and international markets right from Rwanda.

    2. Women Leading the Coaching Industry in Rwanda

The partnership between KORA & Career Women’s Network Kigali is intended to set women at the forefront of the coaching industry. The purpose of selected women as sole participants during the Academy’s soft-launch are the following:

c.The ability to attract international students to KORA Coaching & Business Academy in Rwanda, will present opportunities for Rwanda to be the go-to destination of world-class international courses.

d.The Academy’s vision is to contribute to the country’s vision to become a MICE destination. This will be achieved with delivery of various Coaching Workshops, Seminars and conferences.

e.To export Rwandan Coaches to the world: therefore reversing the consumer status and transforming Rwanda into a sure contributor in the global coaching industry.

  • Preschoolers visit, amazed at Marriott Hotel facilities

As they toured the hotel on Thursday, the preschoolers were especially amazed at seeing the hotel rooms’ doors opening by tapping the cards, something that made them require the guide to do it over and over again to see doors opening.

Ian Impano, said he liked the hotel gardens and swimming pool but was especially surprised by the way of opening hotel rooms.

“I am so happy for visiting such a beautiful place but tapping a card on doors to open has marked my day. I tried it myself and successfully opened; I was happy,” said the six-year old Impano.

Orna, 5, said “We have played many games; it was good. It is a beautiful place and I want to build a beautiful house like Marriott in future.”

Their tutor Kelsey Merz said “As the future citizen of the country, children need to visit different venues to satisfy their curiosity and learn. This tour is so important in sharpening children’s mind and making them happy.”

Yulia Bogdanova, the director of Human Resource at Marriott Hotel said it was great pleasure for the hotel to host children and contribute in shaping their future, adding that children start developing dreams for careers at an early age.

“They can like what we are doing here at Marriott and decide to pursue hospitality in their studies,” she said.

She said Marriott is always trying to give a contribution that brings positive impact in the society and so eager to impacting children’s careers.

Visiting children had a fun-filled day involving touring the hotel facilities, playing games and sharing feasts with staff of the five-star Marriott Hotel.

Under the hotel’s “Spirit to Serve” initiative, Marriott organises a corporate social responsibility activity every month to give back to the community.

The hotel staff also visited children who were hospitalised at Masaka Hospital in December 2017 and shared Christmas with them by donating toys, school materials and interactions through different games.

The multi-stored 12 houses are located in the most desired corporate and strategic Kigali suburb, Nyarutarama, in Gasabo District. Each unit has two or three spacious rooms.

DND Developers Managing Director, Daniel Mehari, tells IGIHE that the units currently on sale constitute the second phase of the project while all 10 houses in the first phase have been sold out.

“People have different occupations and, therefore, need housing units in different categories. People were looking for big and expensive houses some years back but they are currently looking for smaller and less expensive houses. We are responding to the needs of the time,” he says.

Mehari adds that each of their apartments stands between Rwf60 and 75 million as the two-room and three-room units stand at $75,000 and $80,000 respectively.

“Our apartments are much cheaper compared to others of their quality in Kigali. They are located in the most beautiful location of Kigali where you cannot find any other apartment below $100,000. Others similar to ours in other areas like Gisozi are sold at higher prices between Rwf100 and 150 million,” he says.

With his extensive experience in construction sector, Mehari says DND Developers considers building a lot cheaper units, in the near future, that will be sold below Rwf45 million.

“We are planning this. It is a process that requires going step by step. We shall start developing cheaper units than these ones in the next few years. The challenge we are facing is the cost of developing them and we, therefore, have to construct many units at the same time so that we avoid losses,” adds Mehari.

Established in Rwanda in 2015, DND Developers Ltd seeks to contribute to the country’s development through changing habitation.

The houses under construction will be fully completed by April 2018. They are in Nyarutarama on the road KG314 St.
