Students die after eating poisoned chapatti

TWO students of Mukuju Core Primary Teachers College in Tororo have died while four others are admitted at Tororo Hospital after eating ‘chapattis’ laced with poison.

Chapatti is local delicacy made from wheat flour.

John Opera and Patrick Owori died at Tororo Hospital where they were rushed for treatment while the other two classmates Wilberforce Mazaki and David Okumu were admitted in critical condition.

Others admitted are the chapatti seller Joseph Imoi and bodaboda cyclist John Othieno who ate the same batch of chapatti on Friday.

It’s suspected that someone sneaked into Imo’s shop and laced the chapatti dough with poison.

The college principal Consulate Tino said the students started feeling unwell and were rushed to the college sick bay for first aid but when their condition worsened, they were transferred to Tororo Hospital where they died before they could get treatment.

Tino added that earlier in the day she had reprimanded students who sneaked out of the college to buy food and encouraged them to buy it from the college canteen but some used the advantage of the games hour to sneak out and purchase the food.

“It’s within our college regulations that no student is allowed to import cooked food but I believe they have been used to buying from the same food vendor but what happened this time is not known. We hope the police will investigate the matter” Tino said.

The class coordinator Samuel Ofumbi said on that day the school canteen was not on operation and this could be the reason why most students sneaked out to buy food stuffs.

Tororo hospital medical superintendent Dr. Tom Ochar said the two who died had irregular heartbeat was too high, were bleeding through the nose and ears at the time of admission.

The district police commander Robert Katuramu said investigation into the matter are underway saying the bodies of the victims will be taken to the analytical lab to establish the cause of the death.

Katuramu added that they have also opened up investigations into the matter under CRB 15/59/2015 while appealing to the public to help police with information that may lead to the arrest of the persons behind the incident.
