Police in Kalungu district are holding a senior two female student in connection with the fire that razed a girls’ dormitory at St. Charles Lwanga Kasasa Secondary School early this week.
Pauline Asio, 14 was arrested for allegedly setting on fire, the dormitory structure that was accommodating 200 female students. Asio was arrested on Thursday, a day after Police had also detained Reverend Brother Anthony Lubowa, the school head teacher to assist with the ongoing investigations.
Noah Sserunjogi, the greater Masaka Police regional spokesperson says they arrested the suspect on a tipoff from one of the Students who suspected that Asio could have known about the cause of the fire, basing on the fear she developed following the incident.
Sserunjogi reveals that school records indicate that the Asio had just concluded a 2-week suspension for stealing from a colleague.
Upon interrogation, the student acknowledged that she caused the fire that burnt the school dormitory in vengeance. She reportedly said that her action was aroused by the ridicule she was subjected to after her return to the school.
She added that although she sought redress from the school authorities, she was disappointed that no action was taken to stop the mockery, a result of which she felt dejected and dissociated from the school community. She however added that she underestimated the likely outcome of her action.
Sserunjogi says that student is yet to face charges of arson and causing malicious damages. She has since recorded her prejudicial statement with the Masaka chief magistrate court pending prosecution.
Members of the school administration have declined to comment on the development, saying the case is handled by police.
The affected students are now sharing beds and other property with their fellow who survived the arson as they accomplish the term.
