{Johannesburg – The man accused of beating a 5-year-old girl to death in Bloemhof for wetting herself should not be granted bail, an outraged African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) said on Sunday.}
It also wants more to be done to educate women on the warning signs for problematic behaviour in relationships before it becomes fatal.
The league called on mothers to seek assistance and find protection for their children when their safety is at risk.
”The killing is senseless and unfortunate for a child who needed love and protection from both parents. She did not deserve to die in such a manner. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased child,” the ANCWL said in a statement.
The girl was beaten to death last Wednesday, allegedly by her mother’s boyfriend, after he apparently became angry when she wet herself while sleeping on a couch made up as a bed.
The urine went into the couch and he allegedly beat her so severely, even tying her to a support structure and throwing her on the ground, that police and paramedics declared her dead when they arrived to help.
Her mother had tried to intervene but was also assaulted, according to police.
The man was arrested and is expected to appear in the Bloemhof Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of murder.
The league called on people in the vicinity and the province to support the child’s grieving family, and wants a heavy sentence for the man as a warning to other perpetrators of violence against women and children.
