{THE Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) has reported that the heavy rains going on in the south-western highlands will continue until April.}
Speaking to the ‘Daily News’ recently, the TMA Director General, Dr Agnes Kijazi, said there will be above normal rainfall in Ruvuma, Rukwa, Iringa and Mbeya regions that will go on until April, urging the public to take all precautions.
Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Kilimanjaro regions will get rains outside the normal rain season, Dr Kijazi said, noting that the October, November and December seasonal rains are over.
She said other regions, including Dodoma, Singida, Kigoma, Katavi and Tabora, will also receive normal to above normal rainfall that will be accompanied by thunderstorms – to also continue until April.
“There are some regions that will receive heavy rains expected to last until April, hence need for the public to take precautions,’’ Dr Kijazi pointed out.
TMA’s ten-day weather forecast; from January 11 to 20, shows that the Lake Victoria Basin; Kagera, Mwanza, Mara, Geita, Simiyu and Shinyanga regions will receive normal rain showers and thunderstorms over a few areas, mostly during the first half of the period.
The north-eastern highlands of Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Manyara regions will receive normal showers over a few areas with the nights seen to be slightly warmer; while the Northern Coast; comprising Dar es Salaam, Morogoro and Tanga regions, Unguja and Pemba, will be dry with a few intervals of normal rains over a few areas, also to be characterised with warm nights.
The Southern Coast Zone, comprising Mtwara and Lindi regions, will receive normal to above normal rainfalls and thunderstorms over some areas with warm nights’ prevalence, while the southern region of Ruvuma will receive normal showers and thunderstorms over some areas.
Recently, over 400 families were left homeless in Mtwara Region after heavy rains and gusty winds swept away the roofs of their houses. Government buildings, schools and over 6,000 cashewnut trees are among the properties destroyed as the rains pounded the region for four days
