{Police in Hoima District have arrested an FDC supporter accused of defacing President Museveni’s campaign posters in Kyarushesha Trading Centre in Hoima District.}
The midwestern regional police spokesperson, Ms Lydia Tumushabe, said Mr Ambrose Tumukwase, was arrested as he tore the NRM presidential candidate’s posters and replacing them with those of the FDC presidential candidate, Col (rtd) Kizza Besigye.
Mr Museveni is expected to conclude his campaign in Bunyoro sub-region with rallies in Hoima District tomorrow.
“He is under police custody and two others are on the run. We are looking for them to answer charges of defacement of posters,” Mr Tumushabe told the Daily Monitor on Tuesday.
He asked supporters of various candidates to keep law and order and cooperate with police in ensuring peace and stability prevails.
Protest
FDC has, however, protested the arrest and claimed that another party supporter, Dan Amir, who had been arrested on similar charges, is missing.
Mr Tumukwase was re-arrested at the weekend and was transported from Kyarushesha Police Post to Hoima Central Police Station in Hoima Town.
He and Mr Amir had been arrested last Friday, a few hours before Dr Besigye campaigned in the trading centre.
Dr Besigye canvassed for votes in Bunyoro sub-region at the weekend.
Bunyoro regional assistant to Dr Besigye’s campaign task force, Mr Ismail Kasule, claimed the two youth activists were arrested as they pinned Dr Besigye’s campaign posters in the area.
When Dr Besigye heard of the arrest of his supporters, he was driven to Kyarushesha Police Post where he was accompanied by his supporters.
They demanded the unconditional release of the suspects who were detained at the police post.
